Birth & Death Certificates
Online ordering for Birth and Death Certificates is now available using our Vital Records Portal. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at 325-692-5600.
Our Vital Statistics office files all birth records for those occurring within the city limits of Abilene with some exceptions. Certified copies of these records may be obtained in person or by mail from the Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District. Only qualified applicants will be allowed to purchase a birth certificate.
Cost
The cost for a Birth Certificate is $23 each, per name, per request. Forms submitted without payment in full will not be processed. The certificate(s) will be mailed back to you the next business day after the request has been received.
Applying
The following persons may apply:
- Individual requesting his/her own birth certificate
- Parent or guardian of the individual named on the certificate (A foster care appointment is not acceptable. Proof of guardianship must be submitted.)
- Immediate family member. Proof of relation is required.
Acceptable Identification
Vital Statistics accepts the following form(s) of identification (ID)*:
- Provide ONE (1) from GROUP A; OR
- If you do not have one from Group A, provide TWO (2) from GROUP B; OR
- If you do not have one from Group A or two from Group B, provide ONE (1) from GROUP B and TWO (2) from GROUP C.

Death Certificates are filed for all those occurring within the city limits of Abilene and Justice of the Peace Precinct One. Certified copies of these records may be obtained in person or by mail by qualified applicants only.
Cost
The cost for a Death Certificate is $21 for one copy and $4 for each additional copy, per name, per request. Forms submitted without payment in full will not be processed. The certificate(s) will be mailed back to you the next business day after the request has been received.
Applying
The following persons may apply:
- An authorized representative of a surviving relative of the deceased (Estate's executor or attorney)
- Court of law
- Funeral director who was in charge of the final disposition of the body of the deceased
- Immediate family (Spouse, parent, grandparents, sister, brother, child)
- An individual who has a proven legal need

Burial Transit Permits
Funeral homes in need of a Burial Transit Permit can request this through the TXEVER system or by email. Please submit appropriate paperwork to: zachary.mire@abilenetx.gov
Other Services
- Birth and death certificate corrections/amendments for births and deaths occurring within Taylor County (exceptions may apply).
- Computer retrieval of certified birth certificate abstracts for anyone born in the state of Texas. The same costs apply.
