Experienced / Lateral Entry Officer

An applicant must meet the following minimum standards by the date of hire unless a different date is indicated:

  • Must be a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Certified Peace Officer and have been previously employed as a Peace Officer in a position with responsibilities comparable to that of a Patrol Officer with the Abilene Police Department
  • Is a U.S. Citizen
  • Age Requirements:
    • Must be at least 21 years old by the date of commission and not more than 45 years old at the time of hire
      • At least 21 years old by the date of commission and not more than 45 years old at the time of hire, and preferably have five years of full-time, cumulative law enforcement experience
      • Be at least 21 years old by the date of commission and not more than 45 years old by the date of hire, and preferably have five years of active duty, cumulative military service
        • Qualifying law enforcement experience must be documented on the Lateral Entry Program Questionnaire Regarding Law Enforcement Experience form. Cumulative active duty military service must be verified by submitting two copies of your DD-214 or other official military documentation at the Physical Agility Test.
  • Has graduated from High School or completed the general educational development (GED)
  • Has the ability to fluently read, write and speak the English language
  • Possesses a valid Texas Driver's License without restrictions other than eyeglass restrictions
  • Is not addicted to narcotics and does not indulge in excessive use of alcohol
  • Has not been convicted of a class A misdemeanor or any felony at any time
  • Is not under indictment for any criminal offense
  • Has never executed at any time a confession to a felony offense, such confession being admissible as evidence against the person in any criminal proceeding in any state or federal court
  • Has not been convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI) within the last ten years or determined to be a habitual traffic violator
  • Has not been convicted of family violence. Family violence includes any act by a member of a family or household against another member of the family or household that is intended to result in physical harm, bodily injury, assault, or sexual assault or that is a threat that reasonably places the member in fear of imminent physical harm, bodily injury, assault, or sexual assault, but does not include defensive measures to protect oneself; or a member of the family or household toward a child of the family or household; whether class A or C misdemeanors.
  • Has not been convicted or been on court ordered community supervision for any class B misdemeanor within the last ten years
  • Has not been discharged from military service under less than honorable conditions
  • Complete DD-214 required
  • Pass a Physical Agility Test
  • Pass a thorough background investigation.
  • Has the ability to meet the physical and academic requirements of the job and by the end of training will satisfactorily complete the following (your acknowledgment will be required during the application process):
    • Rigorous academic instruction
    • Strenuous physical training
    • Exposure to potentially hazardous substances including OC
    • Exposure to the Taser Conductive Electrical Weapon
    • Firearms Qualification
