[ARCHIVED] Officer Involved Shooting

On Saturday, June 26, 2021, just after midnight, police were dispatched to a home in the 1300 Block of Grape Street in North Abilene on a call of a check welfare.  A female caller indicated that a subject was armed with a handgun and it was feared that he would harm her then himself.

Officers arrived at the home, where they encountered an armed male outside the residence who was pacing around a vehicle.  The male was agitated and behaving erratically.  Officers attempted to negotiate with the male who pointed the handgun at himself multiple times before pointing it at officers.  Officers subsequently shot the armed male.  Medical aid was immediately rendered.  He was transported to Hendrick Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.  Notification of next of kin has been made.  The subject is identified as 61-year-old, Robert Acosta-Reyes.

The female was located inside the home and was not injured.  No officers were injured.  Two officers will be placed on administrative leave.  The incident is being investigated concurrently with the Department of Public Safety - Texas Rangers.

The Department asks that anyone with any information regarding this incident contact our non-emergency number at 673-8331.

 Respectfully,

 Rick Tomlin
