ABILENE, TX – On Friday, December 17, 2021, Officers of the Abilene Police Department were notified of a handgun located at an elementary campus. A student noticed the gun in their belongings when preparing to go home for the weekend. The student notified the teacher who then let authorities know. The firearm was immediately secured by police.
Preliminary investigation revealed the handgun was placed in the student’s belongings negligently by a parent. The parent will be issued a citation for Making a Firearm Accessible to a Child, which is a Class C misdemeanor.
There were no injuries or direct threats made to the faculty or students in this incident. The Department worked closely with AISD to resolve this incident.
