Abilene firefighters are ready to help identify lost pets

Thanks to a grant from Best Friends Animal Society, Abilene Animal Services has delivered microchip scanners to each fire station across the city.

Now, lost pets that have been microchipped can be scanned and reunited with their families without ever needing to go to the shelter!

Animal Service's hope in placing a scanner at each Abilene firehouse is that if a nearby resident finds a lost pet, they'll be able to stop by the nearest fire station and get it scanned. If the animal is microchipped, firefighters may then be able to collaborate with others to get the pet returned home, without it ever needing to take up a spot at the animal shelter. Animal Services Director Justin Lelesch hopes avoiding the shelter will also save pet owners the trouble and cost of having to claim their pet at the shelter.
