GrassFire-NewsFlash

On March 17, 2022 at 4:50 p.m. the Abilene Fire Department responded to a report of a grass fire on West Highway 80. Red flag warning conditions existed due to high winds and low relative humidity. These conditions caused the fire to spread rapidly on both sides of Highway 80. From AFD the response included 6 support personnel, 8 engines, 5 brush trucks, 1 ladder, 1 AMBUS and 17 additional firefighters were called in to support operations. Additional resources were requested and filled by Tye VFD, Dyess FD, Merkel VFD and heavy equipment from Taylor County. The Abilene Police Department and Taylor County Sheriff's Department assisted in traffic control and evacuations. The fire is estimated at 50 acres, no structures were lost and no injuries have been reported. The fire is currently under investigation.
