If you have a talent you’ve been waiting to showcase before your friends and neighbors, your Abilene Public Library has just the thing! We are hosting monthly open mic nights where you can show off your skills onstage at the South Branch Library in the Mall of Abilene. Our next open mic night will be Thursday, February 20, at 6 p.m.
Abilene has been designated as a Texas Music Friendly City and there are only a few venues around town where one can perform, so the library has decided to get in on the action. We have the space and the sound system – we just need your talent. Whether you sing or play an instrument, recite poetry or wish to read a short story or perform a monologue, this is a venue for you. If you have written a song and would like to test it out in front of an audience before performing it at your next gig we can help. Maybe you’re a budding comedian and wish to test out your material. Any spoken word or musical expression is encouraged.
The library has always been dedicated to bringing quality S.T.E.A.M programs to the community to educate our patrons in science, technology, math and engineering. What has been lacking is a focus on the arts aspect. We can’t think of a better way to highlight the arts in our community than with an open mic program. Abilene is loaded with artistic talent and you can never have enough opportunities to show it off to the community.
Space is limited so register online on our events calendar at www.abilenetx.gov/apl to reserve your place on our stage. Each performer will be given a 5-minute slot. Small bands can be accommodated if you let us know ahead of time. . . just no full drum sets please. There are no limitations on what you can do, but please keep it clean and family-friendly. Only performers need to register for the event. Walk-ins will only be taken after registered performers as time allows. Let us know whether you will be performing alone or with a group and if you will be bringing an instrument to use. If you are not performing, come out and see what Abilene has to offer...these brave folks need an appreciative audience!
Let’s make this new series a hit at your Abilene Public Library, as it just goes to show that libraries are much more than only books. It’s a celebration of the arts and creativity as well. There are only a handful of places where you can attend events like these, and we hope you make the South Branch your new venue when it comes to viewing live entertainment.
This new monthly event is Thursday, February 20 at 6 p.m. at your South Branch Library, so let’s make it a successful one and show us your talent! For more information, contact Marnie Boyers at 325-698-7565.
