On August 22, 2023 at approximately 12:00 a.m., the Abilene Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 400 block of Amarillo Street. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire showing from the residence. Crews made a transitional attack and were able to stop the spread of the fire and put it out quickly. The occupants were able to get out of the structure unharmed and the Red Cross was contacted to assist them. The estimated cost of damages is $50,000. The investigation determined the fire was caused by a cigarette discarded in a trashcan.
