Get ready for the Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest at your South Branch Library, running October 23-30. Whether you participate as a contestant this year, or a voter, we’re welcoming everyone out to be a part of this unique competition.
If you wish to enter the contest, now’s the time to start thinking up this year’s design to get your pumpkins ready for viewing. You may enter the contest as an individual, or as a family/team, but there’s no carving in this pumpkin decorating contest. It’s all about using art supplies to decorate your pumpkins with, and we ask that you keep it family-friendly too.
Once you’re ready to enter the contest, drop off your pumpkin at the South Branch Library Oct. 19-22. All will be put on display from Oct. 23-30 (as well as on Facebook) for the public to vote on their favorites in each category. Then we’ll announce the winners on Halloween, with the top honors receiving some candy prizes.
To participate in the contest, you must use a real pumpkin (although check with your library as we may have limited pumpkins available to use). Then decorate your pumpkin using any art supplies you’d like. There’s no fee to enter but you may only have one entry per person or team/family in the contest. Several categories will be available for entries, broken down by ages with entries for ages 0-6, ages 7-12, ages 13-17, ages 18+, as well as the team/family category. This way, your pumpkin will be up against your peers in the contest.
During the week of voting, from Oct. 23-30, everyone in the community is invited to visit the library and cast your votes by voting for your favorite entry in each category. Ballots will be available at the circulation desk. All entries will also be placed on an album on our Facebook page @abilenepubliclibrary where you can like your favorite pumpkins, which will be factored in with the paper votes.
Once the winners have been announced and recognized, all pumpkins will be available for pickup from November 1-5. Any pumpkin not collected by that time will then belong to the library to dispose of.
We hope to see many great entries this year, and invite as many of you to drop by and vote for your favorites during the week before Halloween. For more information about the contest and its rules, contact South Branch Manager Alyssa Crow at 325-698-7565, or via email at alyssa.crow@abilenetx.gov.
