Abilene Public Library Offers Mobile Hotspot Devices

Mobile Hotspots Infographic

Going virtual for school or work has become the norm in our country this year. However, not everyone has internet access at home to take part in the virtual side of things. We can help with that now! Your Abilene Public Library (APL) launched its pilot Mobile Hotspot Program. Adult APL cardholders will be able to checkout and take home a mobile hotspot. With it, you’ll have the ability to connect your mobile devices to them for getting online for school, work, or whatever your Internet needs may be.

Mobile hotspots are portable Wi-Fi devices that provide Internet access for people that lack this service at home, or on-the-go. Up to 10 devices can be connected to each hotspot; including laptops, tablets, game consoles, cameras, and more. This will enable patrons to browse, stream, access school assignments, and even work from home if necessary. With a battery life of up to 6 hours on a full charge, hotspots can be taken on-the-go wherever you may need Internet access.

Mobile Hotspot Lending

Hotspots, along with a library card, can be used to gain access to many of the Abilene Public Library’s online resources including: searching our catalog for materials, using databases for homework and research, browsing Overdrive for eAudiobooks and eBooks, and streaming movies, music, audiobooks, and more through Hoopla.

Mobile hotspots will be housed at the Main Library at 202 Cedar St. in the Information Services Department, which is located in the lower level of the building. You will need a valid, adult APL library card at checkout, and staff will provide instructions on its use upon checkout. Hotspots will be checked out for three (3) weeks at a time and includes the case, hotspot, and charger to take home.  Right now there will not be any renewals on these devices. If you need them for longer, you will need to place another device on hold. This will help us to get these devices in a greater number of hands during this pilot program.

To place one on hold, visit us online at www.abilenetx.gov/apl and select catalog search. You will be taken to our online catalog where you can then search for them under the term “hotspot.” Once your device becomes available, you will be notified via email. Remember, at this time, any hold for a hotspot will need to be picked up at the Main Library downtown.  For hotspots not returned by the due date, the patron will be charged the replacement cost of $80.00 for the device until the item is returned in its entirety. They may be returned to any Abilene Public Library location via the book drop or returning it to staff at any of our service desks.

For more information on checking out a mobile hotspot please contact the Information Services Department of the Main Library at 325-676-6025.
