Graphic Novels Put a New Spin on Classic Books

Graphic Novels News Flash Infographic

Graphic novels are definitely a misunderstood book format in the library. When people hear the term, they probably automatically think of superheroes, zombies, and comic books. While many graphic novels are about superheroes and fantasy stories, there is a segment of graphic novels that are actually novels or other books that have been adapted to the graphic novel format. Adapting a novel to be a graphic novel allows the reader to experience that book in a new way. Your Abilene Public Library has a variety of graphic novels that were originally regular novels before being adapted into graphic form. Below are several in our collection that you can check out.

Handmaids Tale Book CoverTo Kill a Mockingbird has been adapted and illustrated by Fred Fordham. The beloved classic novel by Harper Lee is now a graphic novel. You will be able to see the dramatic courtroom scenes featuring Atticus Finch and Tom Robinson, Boo Radley the neighborhood recluse, and of course Scout in a ham costume for the school performance. If you loved the book and movie, then definitely check out the graphic novel to experience the story in a new way.  The Handmaid’s Tale: The Graphic Novel has art and adaption by Renee Nault. Margaret Atwood’s controversial novel has not only been made into a TV series, but is also a graphic novel. The story follows Offred, a Handmaid in the oppressive world of the Republic of Gilead, which is the former United States. The graphic novel brings to life the terrible world that Offred and other Handmaids have been forced into and how they deal with those in authority. This story is also available as a novel, DVD of the TV series and the graphic novel.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has been adapted by Tony Lee, and illustrated by Cliff Richards. If you take one part Jane Austen’s classic novel and add a dose of zombies, you get a mash up of two very different stories in one exciting book. This was an actual novel before it was adapted and published as a graphic novel. The zombies were added right into this classic Regency romance novel so you get the same story...just with zombies. The Bennett sisters unite to fight against victims of “the strange plaque.” Can Elizabeth find romance with Mr. Darcy while fighting for her life?

Kindred Book CoverOctavia E. Butler’s Kindred has been adapted by Damian Duffy and John Jennings. Octavia Butler’s classic time traveling novel also gets the graphic novel treatment. The book follows the story of Dana, an African-American writer in 1970s America who is repeatedly transported back in time to a plantation in Maryland before the American Civil War. With each trip, her time there grows longer and her life is put into more jeopardy. If you enjoy time-traveling books, history, and ‘what if’s’ in your reading, then definitely check this book out.

These are just a small sampling of the variety of the graphic novels that are available at your Abilene Public Library. If you feel like you are in a reading rut, a graphic novel could just be the thing to add some extra excitement and interest to your reading world. Reading a graphic novel that was once a regular novel can provide a sense of familiarity while changing things up. So the next time you are at one of our locations check out our graphic novel section and see what books could be your new favorite!
