City ready to address traffic concerns at new Taylor Elementary campus

Message saying the City is ready to address traffic concerns at the new Taylor Elementary campus

Abilene City Council and City staff would like to reassure residents that they are aware of concerns expressed in relation to traffic created at the opening of the new Taylor Elementary located at 1719 East North 10th Street, and are working with Abilene Independent School District officials on the matter.

Both the City and AISD aim to ensure a safe pick-up and drop-off of students, and are reviewing the Taylor Elementary School site plan to address traffic operations.

At this time, the City encourages all drivers dropping off and picking up students to have patience in the transition period marked by the beginning of the semester and opening of the new campus January 5th.  Traffic patterns that work one day may or may not work the next day.  This happens at most schools at the beginning of the school year, as parents and students learn new traffic patterns and operations, eventually resulting in the most efficient traffic flow.

After conditions normalize through this transition period, City of Abilene Traffic Services will re-evaluate the traffic operations around Taylor Elementary, and make any needed changes.  Changes that require an ordinance amendment will be presented to Abilene City Council for consideration and action.  The expected time frame for any ordinance amendment presentations to the City Council concerning Taylor Elementary is estimated to be late March to early April of 2021.
