To report trash burning, please dial 911.

Exit the premises immediately and call 911 from another location.

7. Can someone help me if I cannot afford a smoke detector for my home?

The Abilene Fire Department has a free smoke alarm program for homeowners who cannot afford them. If you do not have a working smoke alarm in your home, contact the Abilene Fire Department at 325-676-6434 Monday through Friday from 8 am until 5 pm. We will be happy to provide one. State law requires landlords to provide smoke alarms in all rental properties.

9. What does it mean when my smoke detector beeps on and off?

It is telling you to replace the batteries.

10. What is the organizational structure of the Abilene Fire Department?

The Abilene Fire Department is under the direction of the Fire Chief, who is appointed by the City Manager, and consists of 2 branches: Emergency Services and Support Services. Our Department is also fortunate to have a Fire Chaplain who spends time not only with our personnel but also those in need of emergency incidents.

The Abilene Fire Code is under the 2021 International Fire Code with local amendments. Copies of local amendments are available from Fire Prevention at 325-676-6676. Visit the Abilene Code of Ordinances to review local codes and amendments.

13. What is the City of Abilene's ISO rating?

The City of Abilene's Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating is 1 (1 being best and 10 being worst). In 1998, the Texas Department of Insurance began using a Fire Suppression Rating Schedule, the system used in all other states, which grades fire protection on the basis of a city's actual fire exposure and water flow necessary to control fires wherever they occur. The detailed reports of inspections are now carried out by ISO, a private organization, overseen by the Texas State Fire Marshal.
