Post Date:01/11/2019 4:16 PM

The City of Abilene and Rescue the Animals, SPCA is pleased to share that a new all-time record has been set for the fewest number of animals euthanized at the Abilene Animal Shelter.

In 2008, the Abilene Animal Shelter euthanized 13,124 animals.

In 2018, 3,622 animals were euthanized at the Shelter.

Over just the last year, the Shelter has seen a 20% drop in euthanizations, with 806 fewer animals put down in 2018 compared to 2017.
“Of all the statistics concerning the Animal Shelter, this is significant in that it shows we are reducing the population of unwanted dogs and cats,” said Rescue the Animals, SPCA President Paul Washburn. “Rescue the Animals, SPCA would like to congratulate Abilene Animal Shelter staff on making great progress in 2018,” continued Washburn.

With the City of Abilene’s new low cost spay/neuter program, both the City and Rescue the Animals, SPCA are hopeful Abilene’s euthanization numbers will continue to fall into the future.
