City of Abilene Unable to Consider Support of Taylor County Tax Increase Request

Post Date:03/01/2019 3:08 PM

The City of Abilene will not be able to consider a resolution of support for a new Hotel Occupancy Tax currently being requested by Taylor County. The City of Abilene has become aware, through an article in the Abilene Reporter News, that Taylor County is asking the 86th Legislative Session of the State of Texas to authorize the County to levy the 2% Hotel Occupancy Tax.

The City will not be able to consider a resolution of support because there is no scheduled Abilene City Council Meeting before the March 8, 2019 bill filing deadline for the 86th Legislative Session.

Abilene City Manager Robert Hanna also notes that the State of Texas has already created a mechanism for city and county governments to levy a 2% venue tax.

“Indeed, the City of Abilene and Taylor County have a history of working together through the venue tax,” said Hanna. “It is my hope that the City and the County can continue this tradition of working together and use the venue tax mechanism already authorized by the legislature for the benefit of the entire community,” concluded Hanna.
