Shelter Rules

Adoption & Visitation

  1. Absolutely no physical contact with the animals unless a meet-&-greet is arranged by staff.  This means no touching gates, no letting dogs lick fingers -- no physical contact of any kind in the kennels!
  2. Certain wings will be closed to visitors at all times. This is to protect new arrivals that have not been fully vaccinated, or may have various types of parasites or skin issues.  Current residents who have been vaccinated may be susceptible to new issues brought in by strays.

Owner Surrender Policy

As of October 27, 2022, owner surrendered animals will be accepted under the following conditions:

  1. Surrenders must be scheduled between 11:00am to 2:00pm, Monday through Friday. Only Abilene residents may surrender animals.
  2. There will be a $25 fee for each animal surrendered, or litters at $50.
  3. All animals surrendered that are of appropriate age must be up to date on all vaccinations and be spayed/neutered. Proof from a veterinarian is required.
  4. Animals must appear to be in good health, not dangerous, and not feral.

Stray Dogs

Our Animal Control Officers will resume picking up non-aggressive stray dogs Monday, October 17 (Aggressive animals have been picked up throughout the closure.). Public dropoff of stray dogs is discouraged due to the risk of disease currently in the community. Please continue to try to get these dogs home, or call the office at 325-698-0085 to report strays and let the officers assess and remove them or get them home.

Continued Assessments

The shelter will continue the strict cleaning protocols currently in place. We will also continue daily rounds to assess the health/symptoms of each animal and respond immediately to any possibility of infectious disease.  As far as possible, puppies, sick, and elderly dogs will be kept out of the general population.

Thank you for all the continued support of Abilene Animal Services. Please call or come by if you have any questions.
