  1. Library Chess Meet-Up

    If you’re into chess, we invite you to meetup at your Main Library on late Monday afternoons for our weekly meetup. We’ll supply chess boards for up to 20 players at a time, and if you’re new to the game and need some help with the basics, someone will be on staff to help you learn. Come challenge others in some friendly competition. All skill levels are welcome so come try out a gaming session for yourself.

  2. ABCD's of Medicare

    If it’s time for you to sign-up for Medicare, and you don’t know where to begin, be sure to register and attend a free Medicare Class at your Abilene Public Library. Multiple sessions will be hosted each month and led by specialists Jennifer Walter & Breanna Maichel. Each session will run up to 1-hour long and designed with the goal of providing seniors with the tools needed to be able to make the right decisions going into Medicare. From understanding the parts of Medicare to prescription drug plans, learning how to enroll to reviewing health plans, you’ll be sure to get all the answers you need.     If you have an interest in learning how to use a computer, we have the class for you. Computer Basics is a hands-on class giving an introduction to the parts of the computer and how to use them, focusing on its primary navigational tool, the mouse. This 1-session class is designed for people with little to no computer experience, so don’t hesitate to sign-up if you fall into one of these categories.   10. Saturday Matinee: "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"

    Catch a great movie during the South Branch Library’s Saturday Matinee event where we play great hits. At this session we’ll be showing 2003’s “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, based on a popular comic and starring Sean Connery, Stuart Townsend, Peta Wilson, and other familiar names. In this film, in an alternate Victorian Age world, a group of famous contemporary fantasy, science, fiction, and adventure characters team up on a secret mission. This film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of fantasy violence, language and innuendo, and has a run time of 1 hour and 50 minutes. Feel free to bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy with the movie.

    Your ghost with the most is back at it again, and this time he’s made a stop at your Mockingbird Branch Library. We’ll kick things off with a viewing of the hit film “Beetlejuice” starring Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, and Alec Baldwin. In this Tim Burton film, the spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home, and hire a malicious spirit to drive them out. This film is rated PG and has a run time of 1 hour and 32 minutes. Then stick around to see if you can really escape his clutches by taking on a themed Escape Room Make it through in one piece, or end up food for the sand worms...but it won’t be as simple as saying his name three times. Don’t miss your chance to participate in this interactive challenge at your library.
