We utilized RTK GPS technology to accurately capture data as well as aerial photography. The GIS Department maps all the geographic features for Taylor County and the Abilene/Taylor County 9-1-1 District. We also work in conjunction with the Taylor County Central Appraisal District to map the land parcels within the city limits of Abilene.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a tool for mapping geospatial features and connecting them to existing relational databases, thus providing intelligence, and performing analysis on the different features. For example, the Police Department could map the crime density for the entire City or just for certain districts. They could then determine if more patrol units need to be disbursed in the area. The Water Department could map all of the water lines that were installed before 1975 and the areas of the City that generate more work orders for repair work and determine if there is a correlation. There are many more examples to show the usefulness of the GIS. The only limitation is the imagination.
