Aikido @ Cobb Recreation Center - $33 per month

Come to Cobb Recreation Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to learn the art of Aikido! Aikido is a defensive martial arts, and students will learn to blend with an attack to re-direct the force, use throws and joint locking techniques to neutralize an attacker. Class starts on the 1st Tuesday of each month.

It's $33 per month, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm-8:30pm at Cobb Recreation Center. Register at abilenetx.gov/signup!

Country Western Dance Classes

It's time to two-step on over to our country western dancing classes! This class teaches you how to Texas Two-Step, Waltz, Polka, Schottische, Cotton-Eyed Joe and more. All skill levels are welcome to join in our class, everyone will learn something!

Classes will be held at two separate locations. On Mondays, classes will be held at Cobb Recreation Center from 6:30-8:00pm starting September 23, continuing for 7 weeks. On Thursdays, dance classes will be held at Adaptive Recreation Services from 6:30-8:00pm starting on October 3, continuing for 7 weeks. It's $45 per couple or $33 per individual, and you can register online at www.abilenetx.gov/signup!

Basic Manners | Dog Obedience Class

This class is for dogs aged 7 months and up. For your dogs safety, they must have completed all of their puppy shots prior to the first class.You will need to bring proof of shots with you the first day of class.

In this class, your dog will learn basic manners: Settle, sit, down, heeling, recalls, stays, touch, place and manners when meeting others. You will learn how to build a relationship with your dog that will keep him eager to work with you!

Please bring flat or training collar and a six foot leash, as well as any treats your dog loves!

This class focuses on accomplishing the elements to pass the CGC (AKC's Canine Good Citizenship) Test. The CGC test is offered, free of charge, to those participants who would like to test on the last day of class.

Dogs do accompany owners the first day of class.

Maximum of 10 dogs per class, $65 per dog. Classes start on Tuesday, November 5 from 6:30-7:30pm at Cobb Recreation Center and go for 6 weeks until December 17. There will be no class on November 26.  Register online at www.abilenetx.gov/signup!

 Dog Scent Class SM Nov to Dec

Scent Work Class for Dogs

Want to have fun with your dog and watch him/her develop their natural ability to detect scent? This class is perfect for any dog 6 months and older. For your dog's safety, they must have completed all of their shots prior to the first class. You will need to bring proof of shots with you the first day of class.

In this class, you will learn:

  • Search/reward game
  • Proper reward timing
  • Beginning and ending protocol
  • Open box searches
  • Introduce harness work
  • Area searches
  • Interior room searches
  • Threshold hides
  • Introduce elevated hides

  • Shy or fearful dogs build confidence
  • Perfect for all ages and breeds
  • Build a stronger bond between you and your dog!

Please bring a flat collar, at least a 6 foot leash, harness (if you have one) and long line (if you have one). Also, bring LOTS of yummy treats that your dog doesn't always get (i.e. hotdogs, chicken, turkey).

Advanced Dog Scent Class Nov to Dec SM

Advanced Scent Work Class for Dogs

** You must have completed our Regular Scent Work Class prior to enrolling in this Advanced Class.**

For your dog's safety, they must have completed all of their shots prior to the first class. You will need to bring proof of shots with you the first day of class. You will need to bring proof of shots DHLPP + Rabies with you to the first class.

In this class, you will build on the skills learned in the regular scent class and transition your dog from finding a food source scent, to searching for the scent of Birch.

The hides become more difficult and handlers must become better at reading their dog's body language. We focus on proper protocols and good reward timing. There will be room, container, and area searches, as well as vehicle.

Maximum of 6 dogs per class, $65 per dog. Classes start on Thursday, November 7 from 7:30-8:30pm at Cobb Recreation Center and go for 6 weeks until December 19. There will be no class on November 28. Register online at www.abilenetx.gov/signup!

Puppy Class SM

Puppy Obedience Class

This class is for puppies aged 4-6 months. For your puppy's safety, they must have completed all of their puppy shots prior to the first class. The only exception is rabies prior to 6 months of age (as some veterinarians will not administer the rabies vaccine until 6 months). you will need to bring proof of shots with you the first day of class.

In this class, you will learn training techniques that will seem like "fun and games" to your puppy but will actually be building a strong foundation of excellent manners! Your puppy will learn to sit, down, settle, begin the stays, and recall exercises, as well as, meeting strangers and being polite around other dogs. Your puppy will gain confidence through positive reinforcement and the gentle use of instability equipment.

Please bring a flat or training collar and a six foot leash, as well as, any treats or kibble your puppy loves!
