    The annual Community Christmas Tree lighting will be held Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Abilene Civic Center. Along with the tree lighting, AHS Pure Gold will perform along with the AHS/CHS Combined Chamber Orchestras.

  • CityLink to launch Food for Fares Campaign

    CityLink Transit's annual 'Food For Fares' campaign begins Monday Dec. 2, 2013, and will run through Saturday Dec. 7, 2013.' CityLink passengers will get a free ride for each can of food or non-perishable food items donated.' Food donations are accepted on both Fixed Route Bus and Paratransit Van Service. All food and cash donations collected by CityLink are provided to the Food Bank of West Central Texas.

    The City of Abilene Office of Emergency Management is encouraging people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay inside.' Weather for the next three days is forecasted to be very cold with temperatures forecasted to be well below freezing with low wind chill values.

  • Abilene Animal Shelter offers special holiday adoption promotion

    Dozens of animals are in need of a loving home this holiday season. From Nov. 25 to Dec. 31, the Abilene Animal Shelter is giving a special holiday discount of $20 for puppies, kittens, dogs and cats that are adopted from its facility. In addition, Rescue the Animals, SPCA is partnering with the Abilene Animal Shelter to offer additional promotions.

  • City's current 'AA+' bond ratings affirmed

    In preparation for next week's issuance of $65 million in Certificates of Obligation bonds for Water and Sewer System Improvements, the City of Abilene recently received affirmation of its 'AA+' (just one step below the best possible rating of Triple-A) long-term rating for its series 2013 certificates of obligation (CO), and the 'AA+' long-term rating and Standard & Poor's underlying rating (SPUR) on the City's previously issued debt.

    Abilene's annual 'Fall Clean' event will be held Oct. 10-12, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the City of Abilene Environmental Recycling Center (ERC) located at 2209 Oak St.

  • Health District to Hold Flu Clinic

    The Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District will hold a clinic to provide flu vaccinations on Monday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 850 N. 6th St. Regular and high dose vaccines will be available.' The high dose vaccine is available for individuals 65 and over and is designed to induce a stronger immune reaction in individuals who may have a weaker response to the regular vaccine.' All of the vaccines contain the same 3 flu viruses which provide protection for the most commonly circulating flu viruses, including the novel 2009 H1N1 flu virus.

  • New Bike Racks Installed on CityLink Buses

    Abilene CityLink Transit and the City of Abilene announce new bike racks on all CityLink fixed route buses.' The bike racks are installed on the front of the bus and have space for two bicycles.' A bicycle rider can safely place their bike on the front of the bus and then board and ride the bus.

  • Abilene to Receive Funding for S. 11th Street Sidewalk and Bike Route

    The City of Abilene will receive funding for sidewalk and bicycle improvements along South 11th St. between Elmwood Dr. and Treadaway Blvd. The City submitted a request for $946,220 in State funding in December of 2012 as a part of the highly competitive Statewide Transportation Enhancement Program (STEP). The program is administered by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

  • Trail Marker Signs to be Placed Along Cedar Creek Waterway

    A work party to install the first trail marker signs along the Cedar Creek Waterway is planned for Saturday, Sept. 14. The group will begin placing markers at 9:30 a.m. along portions of Cedar and Lytle Creeks.

  • Rabies Case Confirmed within Abilene City Limits

    The City of Abilene's Animal Services Division announced today that a skunk found in west Abilene tested positive for rabies. The specimen was confirmed by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

  • Animal Services Receives $7,000 Donation from Local Car Wash

    Abilene Animal Services will receive $7,146 from a fundraiser held by Mister Car Wash. The check will be presented today at 10:30 a.m. at the Mister Car Wash south side location; 4002 Buffalo Gap Road.

    The City of Abilene's Recreation Division will host the NFL/Gatorade Punt, Pass & Kick local competition on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013 from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Rose Park located at S 7th and Barrow Streets.
