    The City of Abilene and Taylor County remind citizens to register their storm shelter/safe room/basement in a free and voluntary program available to all residents. Data collected will provide emergency responders with a database of storm shelter/safe room/basement locations within the City of Abilene and Taylor County

  • Street Closure planned for City Enhancement Project

    North and South bound traffic on Butternut St. will be closed Wednesday, April 9th through Monday, April 14th for construction related to the South 1st enhancement project. During this time the Public Works Department will complete construction of the cross walks across Butternut St., while minimizing the impact to citizens and local businesses.

    The City of Abilene is taking part in World Autism Awareness Day by turning the lights of the Abilene Civic Center blue tonight April 2, 2014. This is part of the Light It Up Blue movement started by the organization Autism Speaks.

  • 'Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off' to take place Saturday, April 5th 2014

    Saturday, April 5, Keep Abilene Beautiful, the City of Abilene, and Texas Department of Transportation are partnering to host the 'Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off'. The beautification event will bring together hundreds of volunteers who will pick up litter in public areas such as streets, highways and empty fields.

    Several Abilene leaders are teaming up to prepare for the future of our military community. Monday, March 17, 2014 Mayor Norm Archibald, City Manager Larry Gilley, Councilman Joe Spano, and members of the Abilene Industrial Foundation and Military Affairs Committee joined City leaders from across the state at the Texas Military Community Mayors Summit organized by mayors of cities with military installations.

  • Animal Services to re-launch volunteer program

    This month, Animal Services is re-launching the volunteer program that will enhance the services available to the animal population of our community. The program will feature several volunteer positions and opportunities for individuals (age 18 and up) and groups.' The main focus will be on volunteers that can help with off-site adoptions and special projects; then on-site shelter help with evaluation of animals and adoptions.

    The Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District is now offering Expanded Primary Health Care (EPHC) Services for Women at the Sears Clinic location, 2250 Ambler Avenue. EPHC delivers comprehensive health care services to women that qualify for the program at no cost.

  • Register now for 11th Annual Mayor's 5/10K and Fun Run

    It's time to sign up for the 2014 Mayor's 5K or 10K and One-Mile Family Fun Run. The event will begin at the Civic Center on Saturday, April 12 at 8:30 a.m.' The race will take participants through a downtown Abilene course that begins and ends at the Abilene Civic Center. The 5K and 10K will be chip timed.

  • City's Recreation Division to host Mardi Gras dog parade

    The City of Abilene Recreation Division will host a Mardi Gras inspired Krewe of Barkus dog parade on Saturday, March 1 at 10 a.m.' The dog parade will be held at Camp Barkeley Dog Park located near the entrance of the Abilene Zoo at Nelson Park.' Dogs and their owners are encouraged to dress in Mardi Gras attire.

    The City of Abilene is updating its citywide parks, recreation and senior facilities master plan to guide future decisions for parks, recreation, trails and open spaces for the City.     The City of Abilene Recreation Division will host Spring Break Camp for students 6 to 13 years of age during the Spring Break holiday Monday, March 10 to Friday, March 14. The camp will offer themed activity days that include arts and crafts, gym games, field trips and more. Spring Break Camp is an opportunity for children to stay active over the school holiday.

    The City of Abilene Recreation Division is hosting a Girls Volleyball League in the spring of 2014. The league is open to girls ages 9 to 12. Division I is open to girls ages 11 to 12, division II is for girls ages 9 to 10.

  • Carver Youth Council hosts annual Black History Talent Show

    The Carver Youth Council will host their annual Black History Talent Show Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. This year's show, 'The Spirit of Motown', will take place in the Red Carpet Lobby at the Abilene Civic Center located at 1100 N. 6th St.' The annual talent show, featuring youth and adults of all ages, is a fundraiser benefitting the Carver Youth Council.
